I almost can’t keep up with the media blitz for Preacher this Sunday. Anyhow, if you didn’t see it already AMC released the following first four minutes of pilot episode of Preacher:
So, anyway here’s what I thought of it.
The opening was really nicely done with Genesis going through outer space. To me it seemed like a combination/mashup of b-movie and sci-fi special effects from the 1950s through the 1990s. Letting us know exactly the tone that this series is going for.
When I first saw the African preacher get possessed/bonded by Genesis, I figured we would see where he was not worthy of Genesis, but I don’t think there was, unless we are talking about the sin of Pride. (I am the Prophet… I am the chose one… Kabooom!)
Tarantino, Rodriguez, and Ennis cut from the same 90s cloth, as I’ve said before. The blood splatter definitely reminded me of Kill Bill and From Dusk Til Dawn.
Jesse’s dad makes him promise something as a little boy, seemingly before he is killed (by Jody if it follows the comic). Most likely it is the following from the comic book 1.It could be to ‘be like John Wayne’, but that seems a bit trite:
“You gotta be one of the good guys son: Cause there’s way too many of the bad.”2.Preacher, Issue 9 – DC/Vertigo Comics
Willie Nelson!3.“Oh, God! Let’s pass the hat and get him off the Taco Bell commercial! We gotta save Willie!” – Bill Hicks, Rant in E-Minor
Awesome! Not only does the song make sense, but it’s the song that Jesse is singing in the first issue of Preacher as he heads to the bar, where the whole story began.
Image of a cowboy on the whiskey bottles. Not sure if that means anything other than southern/texas whiskey. But maybe a hint to either the spirit of John Wayne or The Saint of the Killers.
I love when a series puts the little details into the show. The different color letters on the marquis/message board for the All Saints Congregational Church is tremendous. No one ever has a full set of the same color, especially not for a poor community.
The preachin is over, and the lesson’s begun.
I’m not going to give this a full review, as it just isn’t fair to anyone. But it was pretty good. I’m coming around on this. I thought it was going to be decent enough, but not quite good/great. But I’m seeing real possibilities here. See you tomorrow.
